What is Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a specialised field within dentistry that focuses on alignment of teeth, correction of the bite, and proper positioning of the jaws. Patients typically seek orthodontic treatment for two main reasons: to enhance their bite function and to improve the aesthetics of their smile.

An orthodontist is a dental specialist who undergoes additional postgraduate training to become an expert in this area. They hold both a general dental degree and a specialist orthodontic degree. Becoming an orthodontist involves completing a dental degree, gaining experience in general dentistry for several years, and receiving admission to one of the 2 to 4 positions available at an accredited university for a 3-year full-time orthodontic program.

Dr Dan is a registered specialist orthodontist. After completing his post-graduate dental degree at the University of Sydney, he practised as a general dentist for several years before undertaking three years of full-time, intensive specialist training at the University of Melbourne. His training included regular appointments at the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne and the Royal Children’s Hospital.
